I believe that it is your experiences and perceptions that informs the process of psychotherapy. Therapy is driven by the goals you and I have set together. It is not about me, or who I am, even though my experiences and training inform my own perspective, intellectually and emotionally, on the topic being discussed.
As your therapist I have a mandate to create a space for you that is safe for intensely private and difficult discussions and to do so in a confidential and ethical manner. Your goal is not to "make me happy" but to better understand your experience of two worlds; the interior world that you live with, and the exterior world that that you live in.
The relationship between client and therapist can be confusing at times. I am a witness and confidant for my clients. This means that though I am friendly, I am not a friend. I am often told intimate details that are not shared with anyone but a lover, partner, or spouse. I am here for you to discuss your hopes, fears, dreams and nightmares with.
Therapy can be a challenging process of growth and change for the client. It is not my job to make therapy pleasant. Instead it is my job to make therapy safe and ultimately rewarding through compassion, discussion, reflection, sympathy, empathy, and occasionally humor. It is important to remember that we are each human beings, sitting in a room together, discussing intense moments and difficult issues in an effort to alleviate your suffering and increase your quality of life.
I have worked with clients of all sexual orientations and genders; varied religions, spiritual paths, and ethnicities; a range of ages from children to the elderly; and both victims and perpetrators of trauma. I have worked with individuals, groups, couples, and families of many types.
Sexual Minority is a term used to describe sexual orientations and practices that are different from mainstream heterosexuality and monogamy. These include, but are not limited to: Homosexuality, Bisexuality, Lesbianism, Celibacy, BDSM, Kink, Fetish, Leathersex, and forms of Consensual Non-Monogamy such as Polyamory, Swinging, "Hot-wife", and Open Relationships. Other forms of fetishistic or non-mainstream sexual practice or identity would be included as well.
The term could also be used to include individuals who are Transgendered as opposed to Cisgendered, as well as those individuals who do not have a common gender identity. This would also include individuals who identify as Gender-fluid, Genderqueer, Neuter or Asexual, or Third-Spirited. It could include individuals with a variety of Intersex conditions if the client wished to.
I have a deep commitment to providing spiritually-sensitive psychotherapy to all individual regardless of their religious faith. My clients have included individuals from various Christian denominations, practicing Jews, Muslims, Buddhists; various NeoPagan traditions, as well as a variety of other faith traditions. I consider this subject so important that I sat on the steering committee for my school's 2006 Cultural Impact Conference on Spirituality and Psychology.
It should be noted that I also respect an individual's right to Atheism, Secular Humanism, or other philosophical perspective not rooted in spirituality or religion. Meaning and value are found in all places and my only goal is to help an individual discover and nourish it as they choose.
I look forward to working with you.
